A Midfield mother and her teen son have been identified as the victims in the deadly crash Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 459 in Hoover.
The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified them as Shontella Sturdivant, 39, and Derrick Sturdivant, 15. The family was from Midfield.
Two other children in the vehicle were taken to Children's of Alabama. One sustained life-threatening injuries; the other was in stable condition, police said Tuesday.
The wreck occurred near the Montgomery Highway interchange early Tuesday afternoon. The vehicle was traveling northbound when it crossed the median and flipped in the southbound lanes.
Shontella Sturdivant was pronounced dead at UAB Hospital, said Deputy Coroner Johnny Long. Her son was dead on the scene of the crash.
Additional details have not yet been released. It was the second fatal crash Tuesday along that stretch of I-459.
