A Covington County Sheriff's deputy who was killed in a two-vehicle crash Friday morning is being identified as Deputy Heath Kelly, according to Alabama State Troopers.
A Covington County Sheriff's deputy who was killed in a two-vehicle crash Friday morning is being identified as Deputy Heath Kelly, according to Alabama State Troopers.
Troopers say Deputy Kelly was killed while on-duty when his patrol car and another vehicle crashed around 7:40 a.m. on Alabama Highway 55. The crash was near the intersection of Hwy. 55 and South Bypass.
Troopers say Kelly was transported to Andalusia Regional Hospital where medical officials pronounced him dead.
The driver of the second vehicle, a white SUV, was also transported to an area hospital with injuries that are described as non-life-threatening.
Deputy Kelly was en route to a report of a crash with injuries and an overturned vehicle when he lost control and crashed his unit.
Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate the crash, but are not releasing any other information at this time.
"We would like to wish our deepest sympathy to the family of Deputy Heath Kelly. It is and was a huge shock and loss to the entire community both personally and professionally," Sheriff Dennis Meeks said in a statement.
