Saturday crash claims life of Montgomery man in Bullock County

A two-vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 11:06 p.m. Saturday, May 17, has claimed the life of a Montgomery man. Jordan D. Todd, 39, was fatally injured when the 2004 GMC Yukon he was driving was struck by the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Garrison H. Gray, 21, of Madison.

A devastating collision Saturday night has resulted in the death of a Montgomery resident and left two others injured in rural Bullock County. At approximately 11:06 p.m. on May 17, 2025, 39-year-old Jordan D. Todd was fatally injured when his 2004 GMC Yukon was struck by a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado at the intersection of U.S. Highway 82 and Bullock County Road 7. The Silverado was driven by 21-year-old Garrison H. Gray of Madison, who sustained injuries in the crash. Richard I. Albright III, a 44-year-old Troy resident who was a passenger in the Silverado, was also injured in the collision. According to initial reports from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), Todd was not wearing a seat belt at the time of impact and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Both Gray and Albright were transported to Troy Regional Medical Center for treatment of their injuries. The crash site is located approximately 11 miles west of Union Springs. ALEA Highway Patrol Division Troopers responded to the scene and have launched an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.

Location and Infrastructure

The intersection of U.S. Highway 82 and Bullock County Road 7 represents a critical junction in rural Bullock County where state highway traffic intersects with local county road users. U.S. 82 serves as a major east-west corridor across central Alabama, connecting communities and facilitating regional transportation of both passengers and goods. The crash location, situated 11 miles west of Union Springs, falls within a predominantly rural section of highway where higher speeds are typically permitted. This particular intersection may present visibility challenges, particularly during nighttime hours when this crash occurred. The area features minimal artificial lighting, potentially contributing to reduced visibility for drivers navigating the intersection. While traffic volume is generally lower in this rural setting compared to urban areas, the speed differential between vehicles on the highway and those entering from county roads can create hazardous conditions for motorists.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Under Alabama law, victims of motor vehicle accidents and their families may be entitled to pursue compensation for damages incurred. Alabama operates under a "fault" insurance system, meaning the party responsible for causing the accident may be liable for resulting damages. The state's statute of limitations generally allows accident victims two years from the date of the incident to file personal injury claims. For wrongful death actions, surviving family members typically have two years from the date of death to initiate legal proceedings. Compensation may include medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and in cases of fatality, funeral expenses and loss of companionship. Alabama's contributory negligence doctrine is particularly significant, as it may bar recovery if the injured party is found even partially at fault. Additionally, Alabama's mandatory seat belt law (Code of Alabama § 32-5B-4) requires front-seat occupants to wear safety restraints, a factor that may impact liability determinations in this case.
