Parks said he and Wheeler had been enjoying a day out Monday and were walking their scooters through a crosswalk — not riding them — when all of their life plans came to a screeching halt in a moment Parks said replays in his mind every time he closes his eyes.
A 20-year-old woman is hospitalized in critical condition after a motorcycle crashed into her motorized scooter in a Midtown intersection Monday night, police said. The incident occurred just before 7:30 p.m. when the woman, identified as Cynthia Wheeler, was riding the scooter westbound on a sidewalk on the north side of 32nd Avenue and into a crosswalk on C Street, Anchorage police spokeswoman Jennifer Castro said. When Wheeler was in the intersection, she was struck by a motorcycle driven by 26-year-old Michael Frazier, Castro said. Wheeler was not wearing a helmet, Castro said. She was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, including head trauma, and was listed in critical condition Tuesday morning, Castro said. Frazier received minor injuries in the crash. APD's Traffic Investigation Unit responded, and police are continuing to investigate the crash. No citations or charges had been issued, Castro said. Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash and has not already spoken to police to contact dispatch at 786-8900. Police are also asking businesses in the area of the collision that may have surveillance video that could be helpful to the investigation to contact APD. It is illegal to drive a motorized scooter on any public sidewalk or street, Castro said.
