2 KILLED AFTER VAN CRASHES HEAD-ON INTO SAMTRANS BUS

The driver and passenger of a van were killed Friday when the van collided head-on with a San Mateo County Transit District bus this afternoon in San Mateo, police and SamTrans officials said.

A passenger in the van died at the scene and the driver was taken to a hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries a short time later, SamTrans spokeswoman Jayme Ackemann said.

The male driver and a female passenger in the van died, and at least three passengers on the bus suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to Ackemann and police.

Joseph Stivala, 84, was the driver of the van that crossed the middle line on El Camino Real and slammed into the bus, the San Mateo County coroner’s office reported. His wife,Anna Stivala, 79, was a passenger in the van. The couple lived in San Mateo.
One of the passengers in the van, Anna Stivala, died at the scene, while the driver, Joseph Stivala, was transported to hospital but died shortly thereafter. Five people on the bus were taken to the hospital, though all had injuries which were considered non-life threatening.
