Timothy J. Wilson, a spokesman for the D.C. fire department, said the engine was responding to an emergency call for a gas leak when the collision occurred. The circumstances of the crash remains under investigation.
Wilson said four firefighters were injured, one seriously. Three others had minor injuries.
