Five dead after crash on State Road 70, Desoto County

Five people are dead and one child in critical condition this Monday morning after a crash on State Road 70 in Desoto County. Florida Highway Patrol tells us one car was heading east and the other was heading westbound on State Road 70, west of the Highlands County Line. FHP tells us the first car hydroplaned on the wet roadways crossing the center line. That's when the second car hit the first.

The driver of the truck, Jennifer Zuniga, 30, of Venice, died. Her passenger, Cort Thivierge, 6, was transported to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition. All of the occupants of the Vokswagon suffered fatal injuries and have been identified as Lamour Welch, 29, Antwayne Robinson, 25, India Welch, 24, and Tehira Welch, 18.

The truck hydroplaned on the wet roadway, rotated and crossed the center line and the FHP says the Volkswagon evasively steered the right side tires into the north side grass shoulder.
