A convicted felon already on probation crashed a stolen van Saturday afternoon injuring two people before attempting to flee on foot.

The incident occurred just before 1 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 4 in Hillsborough County near the McIntosh Rd. exit. Robert Emmett Moore IV was eventually captured, arrested and booked into the Hillsborough County Jail where he is facing a variety of charges.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report Gurnam Hayre’s 1999 Plymouth Voyager broke down on the outside paved shoulder of the roadway. Hayre, a 44-year-old Winter Haven man, got out of the vehicle to investigate and was standing in front of it when Moore slammed into the van from behind.

Investigators say the 1997 Dodge van Moore was driving was stolen. The impact knocked Hayre to the ground causing serious injuries. He was transported to Lakeland Regional Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition.

A passenger in the vehicle – 44-year-old Sarbjit Hayre of Winter Haven – suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. The crash sent the Dodge van across the interstate before coming to a rest in the inside lane.

Moore exited and fled the scene on foot. He was located a short time later by a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputy patrolling in the area. Moore suffered several injuries and was transported to Tampa General Hospital where he was treated and released into the custody of law enforcement.

Witnesses reported seeing the suspect driving erratically at a high rate of speed just prior to the crash. Moore is facing a variety of charges including fleeing the scene of a crash, reckless driving, violating the terms of his probation and being in possession of a stolen vehicle.

Additional charges may be filed. The crash snarled traffic in the area for approximately two hours.

Moore has an extensive arrest record in Hillsborough County and was already on felony probation for a 2012 conviction out of Hillsborough County for giving false information to a pawn broker. The suspect has been arrested 19 times in the Bay area since 2000 on a variety of charges including drug possession, operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license and petit theft.
