Investigators with the St. Petersburg Police Department are asking for the public’s assistance in locating the driver of a vehicle that fled a fatal hit-and-run crash early Sunday morning.
Investigators with the St. Petersburg Police Department are asking for the public’s assistance in locating the driver of a vehicle that fled a fatal hit-and-run crash early Sunday morning. The incident occurred at approximately 3:10 a.m. just north of the crosswalk at the intersection of 5th Ave. North and 4th St. According to a SPPD report an unidentified man was walking east from the west side of 4th St. when he was struck by an unknown vehicle. The pedestrian was thrown onto the hood and into the windshield before he was ejected onto the pavement. Investigators say the vehicle attempted to stop before hitting the victim but fled the scene immediately after impact. The pedestrian was transported to Bayfront Medical Center where he later died. The suspect vehicle should have impact damage on the front end and the windshield. Personnel with St. Petersburg Fire Rescue were also at the scene of the crash and told investigators that several drivers stopped their vehicles on the side of road to take pictures and or videos with their cellphones. Anyone who may have shot video or pictures at the crash scene is asked to contact the authorities.
