Authorities say a 2-year-old boy died after being struck by a Tampa water department truck at an apartment complex. Tampa police spokeswoman Janelle McGregor says Demetric Laynton darted between two vehicles Thursday night and the truck driver wasn't able to stop before hitting him. McGregor says the driver was "visibly shaken." The child was taken to a hospital where he died a short time later. Police say the child was being watched by a friend of his mother while she ran errands. Cousin Ali Muhammad told media outlets that the child was being held outside but at some point wiggled loose and ran into the road. An investigation continues. It was not clear whether the driver was on city business when the incident occurred.
