Bobby Bowden's Grandson Killed in Central Florida Crash.

Former Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden's grandson was one of two men killed when their car flipped into a small ditch off a central Florida road Thursday, authorities said.
A grandson of retired Florida State University football coach Bobby Bowden was among two young men killed Thursday in a traffic crash in Polk County, the Sheriff's Office said. Investigators said the driver, Rafael Fernandes De Aguiar Valim, 25, and passenger Taylor Jeffrey Bowden, 23, both of Winter Haven, and Robert Lewis Edwards, 22, of Boca Raton were at a bar in Winter Haven on Christmas night prior to the 2 a.m. crash in Winter Haven. Edwards, the back-seat passenger, survived the crash into a ditch or creek filled with 5 feet of water. On Thursday, workers in a garbage truck noticed Valim's Mitsubishi upside-down and party submerged off Country Club Road South, between Dundee and Lake Hamilton roads, about 7:45 a.m. The front end was underwater and the rear end was sticking out. The car apparently broke through a wood fence and careened down an embankment into the water, deputies said. Investigators think alcohol was a factor in the crash, but they won't know for sure until a blood-alcohol test on the driver comes back, a sheriff's spokeswoman said. Deputies also think speeding was involved, she said. Sheriff's divers tried to find survivors, but there were no signs of life from the car until about 11:45 a.m., when deputies heard noises coming from the car and a man inside said he was cold and needed help, the Sheriff's Office said. Divers rescued Edwards, who was submerged up to his neck, they said. He was treated at Winter Haven Hospital for hypothermia and other injuries. Although the divers were in the water immediately after they arrived about 8:15 a.m., they got no response when they banged on the car, Eleazer said. They assume that Edwards was unconscious for several hours and survived in an air pocket. Initially and for their safety, the divers decided not to explore the car in the murky water because there were no signs of life, Eleazer said. They opted instead to pull it out to retrieve the bodies until they heard Edwards.
