A driver was taken into custody Wednesday after allegedly fleeing a multi-vehicle crash on Pleasant Hill Road in Gwinnett County, Georgia, only to be apprehended outside a nearby Popeyes restaurant. According to Duluth police, officers responded to reports of multiple collisions along Pleasant Hill Road between Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and the Johns Creek border. Witnesses told investigators that a beige Volvo traveled into oncoming traffic from Johns Creek into Duluth's jurisdiction, causing several collisions before coming to a stop. The Volvo was involved in a crash with a blue sedan, leaving debris and damage scattered across the busy roadway. Rather than remaining at the scene, the driver allegedly walked to a nearby Popeyes to get food. Officers arrested the individual when he exited the restaurant. Police have not released the driver's identity, and it remains unclear whether anyone sustained injuries in the collisions. The investigation into what caused the driver to cross into oncoming traffic is ongoing.

Location and Infrastructure

Pleasant Hill Road between Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and the Johns Creek border is a heavily trafficked commercial corridor in Gwinnett County, serving as a primary east-west route connecting multiple municipalities including Duluth and Johns Creek. This stretch of roadway features numerous retail centers, restaurants, and businesses that generate significant daily traffic volumes, particularly during peak hours. The area where the collisions occurred sits near the jurisdictional boundary between Duluth and Johns Creek, which can present coordination challenges for emergency responders. Pleasant Hill Road in this section typically includes multiple lanes in each direction with turn lanes serving adjacent commercial properties. The high concentration of driveways, traffic signals, and pedestrian activity in this commercial district requires heightened driver attention and creates potential conflict points for vehicles navigating the area.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Under Georgia law (O.C.G.A. § 40-6-270), drivers involved in accidents resulting in injury, death, or property damage are required to stop at the scene, provide identification, and render reasonable assistance. Leaving the scene of an accident can result in criminal charges ranging from misdemeanors to felonies depending on the severity of injuries involved. Victims of hit-and-run crashes in Georgia generally have two years from the date of the accident to file personal injury claims under the state's statute of limitations. Those affected may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, property damage, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Uninsured motorist coverage may provide crucial protection for victims when at-fault drivers flee or lack adequate insurance. Individuals involved in this incident should document all damages, obtain copies of the police report, and consider consulting with a personal injury attorney to understand their specific legal options.
