The Illinois State Police(link is external) reported its preliminary investigation indicates the Fairfield man was driving his SUV north at approximately 5:30 a.m. on Route 130 approximately ΒΌ mile south of Coles County Road 300 North when his vehicle crossed the center line for unknown reasons and struck the front of the other driver's southbound car.

Illinois State Police report a northbound SUV driven by 50-year-old Tony Xanders of Fairfield crossed the center line and struck head on car driven by 47-year-old Micah Morrison of Mattoon. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by Coles County Coroner Ed Schniers.
