Jennifer Fernandes, 22, Thomas Dobosz, 32, Lauren Dobosz, 31, and five children killed in fiery wrong-way collision on Interstate 90 in Hampshire, Illinois

A van was driving the wrong way on westbound I-90 when it struck another car head-on around 2:11 a.m., state police said. Both vehicles became fully engulfed in flames.

The crash involved a silver Acura TSX and a van. A male driver of the van got out the van, but his wife and five children were trapped in the burning van. A female driver in the Acura TSX was also trapped in the burning vehicle, and died at the scene. A nurse on scene gave aid to the driver of the van.

The van, which was traveling the wrong way, struck a passenger vehicle head-on.

Both vehicles became fully engulfed in flames.

The seven confirmed dead are an adult woman and five children from the van and an adult woman from the passenger vehicle. One person was flown by helicopter to Loyola Medical Center with critical injuries, according to a news release from the Hampshire Fire Protection District.

State Police are still trying to figure out why Fernandes was going the wrong way. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the five children.

District 15 Superintendent Laurie Heinz addressed the school community Sunday and Monday with statements pledging the support of the district's resources in the grieving process.

He was driving a a Chevrolet full-size van carrying his 31-year-old wife, Lauren, and five children ages 5 to 13 when it collided with a car around 2 a.m. Sunday on Interstate 90 in McHenry County, roughly 50 miles (80 kilometers) from Chicago, police have said.
