Minor injuries reported, after 3 tractor-trailers collide on southbound I-55 near Channahon.
Three semitrailers in I-55 accident.
State police said three semitrailers were involved in the Interstate 55 accident that shut down southbound lanes temporarily Tuesday.
The accident happened at 11:50 a.m., and the left lane was opened in less than an hour.
The accident happened when one semitrailer rear-ended another under the U.S. Route 6 overpass. Traffic was redirected onto Route 6 and then back onto I-55 off of Route 6.
Police said injuries from the accident appeared to be minor.
One of the trucks was a Petsmart Charities Rescue Waggin' used to transport dogs. State police and a Petsmart spokesman said no dogs were in the truck.
The collision occurred in the construction zone for work being done on the I-55 bridge crossing the Des Plaines River. Lanes narrow in the area where the accident occured.
On Monday, state officials held a media event at the construction zone to draw motorists' attention to the need to drive carefully in the area where 172 accidents occurred last year and two people were killed.
