Cops: Man trying to flee police crashes; other motorist killed

After police discontinued the chase, the car driven by Steven “Stevie” T. Luellen, 34, of Elgin, ran a stop sign at Jefferson Avenue and Route 25, killing the driver of a second vehicle and leaving Luellen’s passenger in critical condition, according to Elgin police Cmdr. Glenn Theriault.

An Elgin man fleeing from police was involved in a crash early Tuesday evening that killed the driver of another vehicle, police said.

According to police, the man who was fleeing had a long criminal record and was wanted by police on an Illinois Department of Correction warrant for fleeing and eluding.

The deceased man and the injured woman were not immediately identified.

Officers looking for Luellen attempted a traffic stop at Dundee and Jefferson avenues, Theriault said. “He takes off at a high rate of speed … at 5:08 p.m.”

Seconds later, Luellen’s car ran the stop sign and collided with a minivan in the intersection about four blocks from the original police stop, Theriault said. The minivan flipped several times and ended in a home’s side yard.

The woman and the deceased man were taken to Advocate Sherman Hospital for treatment, and Luellen was taken to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates. Drugs were found in the vehicle, Theriault said.
