Patricia Shemberger, 75, and Noah Kucinski, 13, die when car carrying three is hit by train on Wilson Road in Ingleside, Illinois

Metra spokesperson Michael Gillis told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that outbound Metra train 2603 was traveling on the Milwaukee District North Line when it struck a car.

Police said the crossing’s warning lights and gates lowered before the train arrived, but the man did not slow down the vehicle and drove through the gate. The train then struck the driver’s side of the car.

Another passenger in the back seat, a 13-year-old boy, was critically injured and subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver was transported to Level 1 Trauma Center Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say preliminary findings show that the car failed to heed the rail crossing’s warning lights and drove through a gate directly into the train’s path.
