The accident happened near 4th and Rutledge just before 6 a.m. and involved a semi tractor trailer and a Prompt transport vehicle, according to the Gary Police Department.
One of the passengers in the transport vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lake County Coroner's office, authorities said.
