Lowell Police investigating deadly hit and run crash
Lowell Police are looking for a driver in a hit and run that killed a man just before 11 p.m. Wednesday night on Westford Street.
The victim was identified as 86-year-old Elmer Mortensen of Lowell.
The car sustained heavy damage, including a smashed windshield and other front end damage and when witnesses arrived Mortensen was on the ground.
"He had a cane. I guess after what happened his shoes were off. His cane was like right next to my sisters car and it was so sad," Eric In said.
After the man was identified neighbors said they don't know why he was out on foot that late.
“I’m guessing he might have taken a run to the store. At that hour walking a walk down Westford is pretty bad,” Ryan Page said.
Officers found the car, a blue Volkswagen, early Thursday morning and have identified the owner but have not yet found the driver.
Neighbors say they saw a male get out of the car and look around before driving away,
“He was pulling away as I got out. I think it was a younger kid from what I could see but I didn’t really get to see him taking off,” one man said.
Anyone who may have information is asked to call the Lowell Police Department at (978) 937-3200.
