Michigan State Police say as many as 40 cars may be involved in crashes between White Lake Drive and Russell Road. Two police vehicles are also involved. The Muskegon County Sheriff tells Jon that one county vehicle and one Michigan State Police vehicle were struck while responding to the first crash. An ambulance was dispatched for that crash. Muskegon County Undersheriff Dan Stout tells Jon Mills that one deputy has been taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. That deputy was in his vehicle stopped, on the side of U.S.-31 at another crash when his vehicle was struck. A Michigan State Police SUV was also struck by another vehicle. The trooper inside that SUV was not injured. Several ambulances are being dispatched to the scene. Southbound U.S.-31 was closed at White Lake Drive through much of the morning.
