A 70-year-old woman died after a bus collided with a semi-truck on US-131 Monday, and two others were hospitalized. It happened around 10:15 a.m. Monday on US-131 near the KL Avenue overpass in Oshtemo Township, according to the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office. Authorities say Gary Everdeen was driving a Metro Transit (County Connect) bus south on US-131, carrying two passengers. Authorities say he failed to stop as traffic slowed and other vehicles stopped due to another crash in the southbound lanes. The bus then rear-ended a semi-truck. Sandra Hedges, 70, of Plainwell, was taken to Borgess Medical Center. She died of her injuries around 8 p.m. Tuesday. Carol Handy, 79, of Richland, was first taken to Borgess and then transferred to Bronson Methodist Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition as of Tuesday afternoon. Everdeen, 57, was hospitalized at Bronson in serious condition. Everdeen and Handy were both wearing their seat belts. Hedges was in a wheelchair, which was properly restrained. The semi-truck driver, 49-year-old Andrew Fairchild of Quincy, Ohio, was not hurt. It was not snowing when the crash happened, the sheriff's department says, but weather may have been a factor. The crash remains under investigation.
