Passenger killed in collision at busy Bloomington intersection

In hopes of clearing up the conflicting accounts, police say they are looking for witnesses to the crash. Anyone with information is urged to call officer Bret Anderberg at 952-563-8861.

A two-car collision at a busy Bloomington intersection has claimed the life of a 92-year-old man and has the man’s wife and the other driver both claiming the right of way, authorities said Thursday.

The crash occurred about 2:30 p.m. on May 7 at Normandale Boulevard and W. 98th Street, killing William H. Kappes Sr., of Minneapolis, police said.

Kappes was hospitalized at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis and died Tuesday, the medical examiner’s office said.

William and Irene Kappes had been married for more than 70 years, according to family.

According to police, Irene Kappes, 91, was heading east on 98th and entered the intersection. The other driver, a 20-year-old woman from Bloomington, was northbound on Normandale and struck Kappes’ car on the passenger side.

“Both drivers believe they had the green light,” said Deputy Police Chief Vic Poyer, who added that the signal lights were functioning properly.

In hopes of clearing up the conflicting accounts, police say they are looking for witnesses to the crash. Anyone with information is urged to call officer Bret Anderberg at 952-563-8861.

The 20-year-old, who was uninjured, was cited for violating conditions of her driver’s permit because she did not have a licensed driver with her, Poyer said. He declined to release her name.

Irene Kappes suffered minor injuries, the deputy chief said.
