25-year-old man seriously injured, transported to hospital, after his jeep is struck by a tractor-trailer, after it had run out of gas, in I-93 near Manchester.
Man, 25, seriously injured when tanker hits car on I-93.
A 25-year-old man was seriously injured on Interstate 93 on Thursday when a tanker truck struck his Jeep, throwing him from the vehicle.
Police said the man suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Elliot Hospital for surgery.
The crash shut down a portion of I-93 north for about four hours. State police said the truck crashed into the Jeep near exit 6 about 12:30 a.m.
"As a result of that, the operator of the Jeep, the 25-year-old gentleman, was ejected from the Jeep," said Lt. Christopher Wagner.
Police said the force of the crash threw the man into the barrier separating the north and southbound lanes.
"As the troopers arrived on scene, they found the situation to be fairly grave, with life-threatening injuries to the operator of the passenger vehicle," Wagner said.
A good Samaritan helped police administer aid until an ambulance arrived.
Police haven't identified the man other than to release his age and say he's from New Hampshire. The driver of the tanker truck was also taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
Initial reports said the Jeep had run out of gas and was either stopped or barely moving in the travel lanes when it was hit. Police said they would like to confirm that by speaking with the Jeep's driver.
"Hopefully, if we are able to talk to him, along with speaking with the driver of the truck, we're comfortable we'll get to the bottom of what happened," Wagner said.
Police said speed and alcohol did not appear to be factors in the crash.
