Troopers in Gaston County have charged a man with drinking and driving after he sideswiped a train Wednesday morning.

The incident was reported at 2:30 a.m. at NC 150 and Hephzibah Church Road outside Cherryville, according to the NC Highway Patrol.

Matthew Manfriedi, 34, is charged with driving while under the influence after Troopers say he drove down the railroad tracks and sideswiped a an oncoming train.

Troopers say he had fallen asleep when a westboundf CSX train came along carrying empty tank cars.

He was arrested and taken to Cleveland Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.
