The N.C. State Highway Patrol said Nicholas Glenn McGee, 24, of Fuquay-Varina, was driving a Toyota SUV eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-40 when his vehicle hit another vehicle, rolled over the center median and landed in the median on the eastbound lane, news outlets reported. McGee was thrown from his vehicle and died at the scene, the patrol said.

Court records showed McGee was convicted in Harnett County of driving while impaired in 2016. He received a suspended sentence for the charge.

On Tuesday, the NC Medical Examiner’s Office identified the two victims as Jerardo Trevino, 30, of Durham, the driver, and a passenger, Savanna Lynn Ray, 23, of Wake Forest, his girlfriend.
