Everett was a decided underdog in his race against Republican U.S. Rep. Markwayne Mullin for the 2nd District seat that stretches across eastern Oklahoma from the Kansas state line to the Red River border with Texas. A Korean War veteran and a retired teacher, Everett ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination in 2012.

Everett's name will still appear on the ballot. He was running against Republican Markwayne Mullin and Independent candidate Jon Douthitt.
The 81-year-old Democratic nominee in the race for a U.S. House seat in eastern Oklahoma, Earl Everett, died following a car accident Friday afternoon. Everett was crossing Highway 62 when he was hit broadside by another vehicle. Everett was transported by helicopter to a Tulsa hospital in critical condition where he later died.
