Oakridge man survives a night in crashed car on remote forest road.
An Oakridge man spent the night in his wrecked car off a U.S. Forest Service road near the Hills Creek Reservoir in Lane County before a passing driver spotted him and reported the accident, Oregon State Police said Tuesday.
Russell B. Hayes, 59, apparently lost control of his car Sunday afternoon going around a right curve, went across the road and hit several trees, Oregon State Police said.
He was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Springfield with serious, but not life-threatening injuries, police said.
A motorist came upon the accident about 1:20 p.m. Monday on Forest Service Road 23 near milepost 11 south of Oregon 58. Hayes was conscious and had managed to pull himself out of the car and was lying next to it, police said.
Emergency workers from the Oakridge Fire Department responded to the scene after the motorist drove back to town to alert authorities.
