A tractor-trailer hit and killed a young woman on Interstate 70 who had gotten out of a vehicle after a crash early Monday morning in South Huntingdon Township, Westmoreland County.
State police said Siva Marie Stewart, 22, of Connellsville, was an occupant of a Jeep that was headed west in the eastbound lanes of the highway and collided head-on with a minivan at about 2:50 a.m. near the Smithton off-ramp (Exit 49).
Both vehicles came to rest in the left lane. The woman got out of the Jeep and was struck by the tractor-trailer, which continued to head east and has not been located, police said.
"She apparently was in the road, was told to get out of the road by witnesses that had stopped to help. Basically the witnesses reported they heard a loud crash and realized she subsequently had been struck by the trailer," said Trooper Stefani Plume.
Plume said troopers are working on checking local businesses which may have surveillance cameras pointing toward the interstate in that area.
Troopers are still working to determine where the driver of the Jeep entered the interstate.
"We're not sure exactly where they got on on 70," Plume said. "We just know she was going basically westbound in the eastbound lane of route 70."
Police said the tractor-trailer is described by witnesses as "new-looking" and white. Police said it should have damage or evidence of hitting the woman and her vehicle on its left side, likely on the driver's side of the front cab area.
Police are also trying to find the woman's boyfriend, later identified as Michael P. Brazzon, 40, who was the driver of the Jeep and fled the scene.
Five people were injured in the minivan, which was traveling from Illinois, police said.
