Jarron Springer, CEO of the Greater Nashville Association of Realtors, is the victim's father, the organization confirmed.
Scott Simpson, 24, of Franklin was the driver of a 2008 Jeep Wrangler that police say rear-ended the 2005 Honda Odyssey Hayes Springer was riding in driven by his mother Jennie Springer.
Simpson told officers that his backpack slid off the front seat just before the crash going westbound on Old Hickory Boulevard.
He went to retrieve it and when he returned his attention to the roadway, he was unable to avoid the collision.
