Police say speed was a factor in the car wreck Saturday night that claimed the life of a 20-year-old Hillsville man.
According to the Virginia State Police, the accident occurred Saturday night at approximately 9:50 p.m. on Coulson Church Road, about 75 feet south of Caywood Road. According to the accident report written by a state trooper, Ethan Jeremy Taylor Webb was driving a 2002 Chevy Malibu in a northeast direction on Coulson Church Road when the vehicle ran off the road at an intersection, struck a sign, a fence and a tree.
Webb and his passenger, a 16-year-old female, were entrapped in the vehicle and extricated by the Hillsville Fire Department, Virginia State Police said. Webb was pronounced dead at the scene. The female passenger was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where she was still hospitalized Monday morning with “significant injuries.”
Police indicated that speed was a factor in the crash and that neither occupant of the vehicle was wearing a seatbelt. He added that the airbags did deploy, but were not effective due to the severity of the crash.
