Nakatoke Kapingiri, 40, injured, airlifted to hospital, and cited, after his SUV leaves the I-495 roadway near Washington D.C., causing a tractor-trailer to jack-knife while trying to avoid his vehicle.
Man charged in accident that shutdown Beltway.
D.C. man driving his SUV on the inner loop of the Capital Beltway in Virginia on Wednesday has been charged in a crash that involved a jackknifed tractor-trailer and shutdown the roadway for two hours.
Virginia State Police said Nakatoke Kapingiri, 40, was driving a 1998 Ford Explorer north on Interstate 495 near the American Legion Bridge when he “swerved to miss a cardboard box in its lane.”
Police said Kapingiri lost control of the vehicle and ran off the left side of the road and struck a Jersey wall. The SUV “then spun back across the northbound lanes and ran off the right shoulder into the guardrail,” police said. At the same time, a tractor-trailer traveling northbound tried to avoid the SUV and jackknifed across the roadway. The two vehicles did not hit each other, police said.
Kapingiri was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital where he was being treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries. He was charged with failing to maintain control of his vehicle.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was a man from Kentucky and was not injured in the crash, police said. His truck was carrying cabinets.
The Beltway reopened just before 1 p.m.
