Investigators were called to the Shannon Airport about 12:26 p.m. after reports of a fiery plane crash, said Corrine Geller, a State Police spokeswoman. She said that the small aircraft landed and the impact set it ablaze.

In a news release, Virginia State Police Spokeswoman Corrine Geller said a 1969 Beech 95-B55 twin-engine, fixed-wing aircraft was trying to land at Shannon Airport near Fredericksburg. The plane touched down midway down the runway and then executed a 'go-around.' While attempting to turn and climb, the aircraft appeared to stall, crash in trees on the airport property and immediately caught on fire.

Oxford said they were taking the Borinstein family to see their son and brother graduate from the Virginia Military Institute. As it ascended, the airplane drifted to the right of the runway’s center line and began a “gradual, climbing left turn” about 50 feet above ground, the report states. It appeared to level off, but then started to descend before “pitching up abruptly and rolling to the left” as it crashed into trees.
