Police ID 1 victim in crash that killed 2 others near Longview

The Washington State Patrol said a vehicle was traveling east when the driver tried to make a pass over a double, solid yellow center line and struck a westbound pickup truck head-on. The eastbound vehicle caught on fire, trapping two people inside. Both occupants died at the scene.

However, authorities say both deceased victims were in their 60s and from Cathlamet, WSP trooper Mike Chapman said. They were both in a Subaru.

Due to the fire, the identities of the two people who died have yet to be confirmed, troopers said. Russell Gilchrist, of Longview, was flown in a LifeFlight helicopter to PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in Vancouver with a broken right leg and fractured vertebrae.
