Authorities in Washburn County on Friday reported that numerous vehicles have broken through icy, snow-covered lakes, including one incident in which the driver died of exposure after walking away from the vehicle. Edward Steinhardt, 30, of Naperville, Ill., was found Friday about a half mile south of Dilly Lake in Potato Creek, according to the Washburn County Sheriff's Office. Steinhardt was an employee of a St. Louis business and had been reported missing along with a company truck Thursday. The truck was equipped with a Global Positioning System that enabled authorities to trace it to Washbun County, where it was found Friday in the south end of Dilly Lake. The truck, which had broken through ice on the lake, had frozen water up to its seats, and investigators believe Steinhardt walked away from the vehicle after getting wet. His body was found in the brushy bottom land along Potato Creek about a half mile from the truck. Authorities believe he died of exposure, according to the release.
