Lu Wang was crossing Sweet Home Road when he was struck by a van driven by 60-year-old Debra Blakely-Riddel. He suffered a head injury and was transported to a hospital in critical condition. More information will be posted as it is released. Police are asking for the public's help to find more information about this incident.

A 70-year-old woman was seriously hurt after she was hit by a car while crossing Maple Road in Amherst. The accident happened around 9:00 a.m. Investigators say Suzanne Martin was crossing Maple Road and was struck by a car driven by William F. Algeri, 77. Martin was taken to ECMC with head and leg injuries.

An elderly motorist and his two passengers were injured this morning when he drove through a red light at an Amherst intersection and hit two other vehicles, town police reported.

It happened at about 9 a.m., when a car heading south on Dodge Road, driven by Leland Moody, 82, of Tonawanda, passed a red light at the intersection of French Road, police said. Moody’s car collided with a sport utility vehicle driven by Michael Atti, 33, of Cheektowaga, who was traveling on French Road.

Amherst Police say a two-vehicle crash on Eagle and Evans Streets sent an 81-year-old man to the hospital.

Police say 37-year-old S.A. Martinez was driving south on Evans Street around 1:17 p.m. Sunday. Martinez’s vehicle reportedly hit the driver’s side door of 81-year-old John B. Starkey’s car, as he was traveling east on Eagle Street. Both drivers are from Amherst.

Starkey was extracated from the vehicle and taken to Erie County Medical Center. He suffered broken ribs and internal injuries, and went into surgery when he arrived at the hospital.

A two-vehicle crash shortly before noon Saturday at Transit and Casey roads in north Amherst fatally injured an Elma woman.

Joanne Schraven, 74, died later Saturday afternoon in Erie County Medical Center. She was a passenger in a 2009 Honda driven by her husband, James G. Schraven, 75, who was treated in ECMC for back pains, Amherst police said.

While turning onto Casey from Transit, the northbound Honda was struck by a southbound 2011 GMC Suburban driven by Jessica Smehlik, 17, of East Amherst. Smehlik was not injured.

Amherst police this afternoon identified the woman who was struck and killed Wednesday night on Niagara Falls Boulevard as Sharon L. Alfiere, 50.

“She also went by the name Sharon L. Caruana,” said Capt. Patrick McKenna of the Accident Investigation Unit. “She had no known address.”

McKenna said the woman was struck when she attempted to cross Niagara Falls Boulevard near East Robinson Road. The fatality occurred minutes before 9 p.m. just south of East Robinson when the woman attempted to cross the road after leaving a nearby Sunoco gas station mini mart, McKenna said.

An 85-year-old Amherst woman who may have suffered a medical emergency died Sunday afternoon when her car veered off the road and hit a tree, Amherst police reported.

Alice K. Schaefer was driving her 2007 Toyota sedan in the 200 block of Sunrise Boulevard around 4 p.m. when the accident occurred, a police Capt. said. Schaefer was taken to Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst, where she was pronounced dead.
