Sharon L. Alfiere, 50, struck and killed by car driven by David J. Miller, 27, while trying to cross street at night in Erie County.

Amherst police this afternoon identified the woman who was struck and killed Wednesday night on Niagara Falls Boulevard as Sharon L. Alfiere, 50.

“She also went by the name Sharon L. Caruana,” said Capt. Patrick McKenna of the Accident Investigation Unit. “She had no known address.”

McKenna said the woman was struck when she attempted to cross Niagara Falls Boulevard near East Robinson Road. The fatality occurred minutes before 9 p.m. just south of East Robinson when the woman attempted to cross the road after leaving a nearby Sunoco gas station mini mart, McKenna said.

“This person was in the driveway of a gas station and apparently tried to cross the road there and she got hit,” said McKenna. “That’s all we know. Apparently she had been hanging out at the gas station.”

Police identified the driver of the vehicle as David J. Miller, 27, of North Tonawanda. No charges have been placed against Miller, according to McKenna, who said the investigation will continue.

“We still have a lot of work to do,” said McKenna.

McKenna said there is a traffic light and a pedestrian crosswalk on the boulevard at the intersection with East Robinson, but the woman did not use them. She was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The speed limit on that stretch of Niagara Falls Boulevard is 45 mph.

The northbound lane of Niagara Falls Boulevard was closed from North French Road to East Robinson Wednesday night while police continued to their investigation.
