Five people injured in collision at Northwest Crescent Avenue and Swan Road in Sunnyside, Washington
It was about 6:00 p.m. when Jose D. Cortes, 34, was driving west on Van Belle Road when he for some reason veered into the oncoming lane. There he collided with a tractor that was towing farm equipment, driven by Clifford R. Van Belle, 77, before crashing into a pickup truck driven by Blake A. Van Belle, 16. Cortes has been hospitalized, though the extent of his injuries are not yet known. No one else was hurt in the accident.
At about 12:50pm, a pickup truck driven by John C. Bates, 63, was stopped on Sunnyside-Mabton Road waiting to turn left onto Penn Avenue, with another pickup truck driven by Ramirez-Hernandez behind him. A third vehicle that was behind both trucks, which was a Toyota Prius driven by Cole G. Gardner, 16, failed to stop in time and rear-ended Ramirez-Hernandez, whose pickup was propelled into Bates'. Just before 6:00pm, a car traveling south on South First Street driven by John M. Fannin, 55, struck a man, identified as Deciderio Zuniga, 74, who was taken to the hospital before being pronounced dead. The driver stayed at the scene of the crash and was uninjured.
