At about 12:50pm, a pickup truck driven by John C. Bates, 63, was stopped on Sunnyside-Mabton Road waiting to turn left onto Penn Avenue, with another pickup truck driven by Ramirez-Hernandez behind him. A third vehicle that was behind both trucks, which was a Toyota Prius driven by Cole G. Gardner, 16, failed to stop in time and rear-ended Ramirez-Hernandez, whose pickup was propelled into Bates'.
