Authorities have identified the people killed and injured in a three-vehicle crash Thursday on the New York State Thruway.
Just after 10 a.m. emergency responders were called to the crash[1] on the Thruway at marker 315 westbound in the Seneca County town of Tyre.
The New York State Police said 29-year-old Joel E. Sitts, of Utica, was heading west on the Thruway in a vehicle. As he approached traffic, which was slowing, Sitts rear-ended a car, causing it to rear-end a third vehicle, state police said. All three vehicles came to rest in the westbound lanes.
A 67-year-old man is dead and three others are injured after a rollover crash that Seneca County Sheriff's deputies say was caused by the driver falling asleep.
Deputies tell media outlets that 67-year-old Willy C. Johnson of the Wayne County town of Newark was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at 7:25 a.m. Thursday. It happened on Route 96 in Covert, 40 miles southwest of Syracuse.
Deputies say the driver, 49-year-old Bernice Hammonds of Dundee, Fla., veered off the road after she fell asleep at the wheel. The car hit a ditch, became airborne and rolled over.
