An Alabama Department of Corrections employee was one of the people killed in traffic accidents on icy roads this week.
Corrections Officer Desi Arnez Patterson, 43, was killed Thursday in a wreck on U.S. Highway 82 in southern Chilton County.
Patterson was on his way from his home in Montgomery to work at the Bibb County Correctional Facility in Brent, according to a news release from ADOC spokesman Brian Corbett. He started at the Department of Corrections in August of 1998.
Auburn University's Director of Golf Operations Danielle Downey died in a car accident on Lee Road 57 Thursday night, university officials confirm.
Downey, 33, was involved in a single vehicle crash around 10p. Thursday, according to Lee County law enforcement officials. Downey was traveling north when she lost control of her vehicle, left the roadway and overturned several times. Downey was rushed to the East Alabama Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 10:58 p.m., according to the Lee County Coroner.
The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office is investigating a homicide, the victim found on I 59/20 near two crashed vehicles. Authorities said 40 year old Fredrick Lee Blakely of Tuscaloosa was found dead with a gunshot wound in the Lakeview area of the interstate about 8:30 Thursday night.
They have arrested and charged with capital murder, 37 year old Roderick Dale Washington Jr with the crime.
A Montgomery man was killed Thursday when his vehicle left an icy roadway in southern Chilton County and hit a tree, according to Alabama State Troopers.
Desi Patterson, 43, was killed in the single-vehicle wreck on U.S. 82 about four miles west of Billingsley around 5 a.m., according to Alabama State Troopers spokesman Sgt. Steve Jarrett.
The road was icy and Patterson was not wearing a seat belt during the crash, Jarrett said.
Troopers continue to investigate.
A Birmingham woman was killed in a wreck possibly related to icy weather north of Marion Tuesday morning.
Emma Evans, 64, killed on Alabama 5 at the 75 mile marker, about 12 miles north of Marion, when the vehicle she was driving hit another around 11:05 a.m., according to a news release from a Alabama State Troopers spokesman.
Troopers continue to investigate the wreck.
Alabama State Troopers have released the names of a Wetumpka man and a 2-year-old killed in a seven-vehicle traffic fatality Tuesday morning on Lay Bridge.
Tyrell Harris, 29, of Wetumpka was killed when the vehicle he was driving collided with another vehicle on Lay Bridge, troopers released. A passenger in Harris’ vehicle, Rayne Harris, 2, of Wetumpka, also was killed in the collision.
Five others were injured and transported to area hospitals. One of those injuries is considered critical.
One person was killed and another injured in multiple vehicle crashes on Interstate 20/59 in Birmingham.
The Birmingham Police Department reports two separate crashes happened just before 1:30pm CT on I-20/59, just east of the Arkadelphia Road overpass.
The BPD says a vehicle clipped the rear of another vehicle while driving on I-20/59 southbound, caused the rear vehicle to lose control, cross the median, and crashed into traffic driving in the northbound lanes.
A total of 5 vehicles were involved, including 3 SUVs, one car, one wrecker, and one 18-wheeler truck.
A Leeds woman was killed in a single-vehicle accident in DeKalb County about 12:15 a.m. Monday.
Alabama State Troopers said Jessica Teat, 27, died from injuries after her vehicle left Interstate 59 at the 214 mile marker four miles south of Fort Payne.
The car then struck a concrete drain, coming to a stop, according to a news release.
Troopers are investigating.
One person was injured in a motorcycle crash that closed a portion of Crestwood Boulevard for more than an hour Tuesday afternoon.
A vehicle and motorcycle collided about 2:40 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of Crestwood Boulevard (U.S. 78) in front of the U.S. Post Office near 28th Street South, a Irondale Police Detective said.
The motorcyclist was flown by LifeSaver helicopter to UAB Hospital, police said.
The highway was expected to be reopen by about 4 p.m. Tuesday.
