Corrections Officer Desi Arnez Patterson, 43, was killed Thursday in a wreck on U.S. Highway 82 in southern Chilton County.

Patterson was on his way from his home in Montgomery to work at the Bibb County Correctional Facility in Brent, according to a news release from ADOC spokesman Brian Corbett. He started at the Department of Corrections in August of 1998.

"Our hearts are very heavy. We lost a veteran correctional officer but, more importantly, a caring husband and father," Corrections Commissioner Kim Thomas said in the release. "Officer Desi Patterson left his home in hazardous conditions to protect and serve our State. His sense of duty is indicative of all DOC employees, and it greatly saddens me to see such professionalism rewarded with loss."
