A tractor-trailer headed north on I-81 ran off the left side of the interstate after hitting a piece of guardrail in the road. The guardrail was damaged in another tractor-trailer crash that happened earlier in the day.

According to Virginia State Police, hitting the guardrail that was in the road caused the tractor-trailer to run off the left side of the road and into the median. The tractor-trailer continued down between the northbound and southbound lanes of I-81 in the median until it hit the edge of a bridge.

An 84-year-old man has died after slipping on ice outside his home and being accidentally run over by his wife.

Fairfax County Police say the accident occurred shortly after 10 a.m. Wednesday. Chong Sik Kim of Springfield walked out to the mailbox at the end of his driveway on Hooes Road and slipped on some ice.

At the same time, police say, Kim's 72-year-old wife was backing the couple's Lexus from the garage. Police say she did not see her husband and backed over him.

Kim was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Maryland State Police said they were investigating a fatal accident Wednesday morning in Prince George’s County, as officials throughout the area warned drivers to slow down because of icy road conditions caused when Tuesday night’s snow melted and freezing temperatures made roads slick. The fatal accident occurred around 5 a.m. on the westbound side of Route 214 and St. Michaels Drive in Kettering, where police responded to a report of an overturned 1994 Dodge pick-up truck on the road. The driver, an adult male, was pronounced dead on the scene, police said.

A 25-year-old woman has been charged by Hampton police after they said she drove into a barber shop Tuesday morning. Gracielle Garnett, of the 400 block of Riverdale Drive in Hampton, has been charged with reckless driving in connection to the incident, Hampton Police Division spokesman Sgt. Jason Price said in an email. Police said Garnett was in the parking lot of Kingdom Kids Child Care in the 700 block of West Mercury Boulevard when she accelerated in her Chevrolet Blazer, lost control and hit First Class Barber Salon at 1 Riverdale Drive.

A 63-year-old Newport News man was struck and killed Monday by a van while crossing Mercury Boulevard, a police spokeswoman said. The accident occurred shortly before 10 p.m. when Peter Cornetta, of the 6000 block of Jefferson Avenue, was struck by a 1998 Ford Windstar while crossing Mercury Boulevard about 200 feet west of Newmarket Drive, a Newport News Police Department spokesman said in an email. The minivan was traveling in the right lane eastbound on Mercury Boulevard, Eley said.

A shuttle bus transporting a group back from a birthday party collided with a car and overturned before dawn Sunday along a highway south of the nation's capital, leaving one person dead and sending 16 others to the hospital, Virginia State Police said.

The bus was headed south on Interstate 95 when witnesses reported seeing a speeding white sedan swerve into the bus's lane. Virginia State Police initially said the bus swerved to avoid the car and then overturned, but later said the two vehicles collided, causing the bus driver to lose control, drive off the road and overturn.

A shuttle bus struck a guardrail and overturned before dawn Sunday along busy Interstate 95 south of the nation’s capital, leaving one person dead and sending 16 others to the hospital, Virginia State Police said.

The bus was headed south on the heavily traveled East Coast artery when witnesses reported a white, speeding four-door passenger vehicle swerved into the bus’s travel lane.

A 16-year-old was seriously injured after falling from a mountain board, similar to a skateboard, while being pulled by a vehicle in Ashburn, Va., Sunday. Another 16-year-old was driving the vehicle, which had a rope tied to the rear, in the parking lot of Broad Run High School. That teen has been charged with reckless driving. The victim, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to Inova Loudoun Hospital and was later airlifted to Inova Fairfax Hospital. Last year, another Virginia teen died in a similar incident.

An Arlington County snowplow driver who was caught on camera driving the wrong way was cited by police for causing an accident in the county on the same day. Arlington County Police said the 51-year-old driver was traveling south on S. Monroe Street around 9:18 a.m. Tuesday when he ignored a stop sign and went through an intersection, striking a Toyota Highlander. The Highlander, which was traveling eastbound on S. 18th Street, then struck two parked vehicles. The snowplow driver was given a ticket for disregarding a stop sign. No one was injured.
