Three teenagers died when a stolen car crashed into a tree and caught fire after a chase early Friday, authorities said. The names of those killed have not been released, but police say they were a girl and two boys, all 16 and all from Modesto. According to Modesto Police Sgt. David Chamberlain, a police officer in central Modesto tried to stop a car after seeing the driver violate a vehicle code at 11:40 p.m.
The only person seriously hurt was the driver who investigators say caused the wreck. Officers said they believe the woman was intoxicated. Dispatchers first started getting calls about her driving an SUV erratically about 6 p.m. The driver continued into Bellevue before she made her way back to Redmond. Police said she hit one car then, then another, after running over spike strips and crashing on Avondale Road. “The 30-year-old driver was actually pinned in the vehicle. She had to be extricated and was taken to Harborview.
