A 22-year-old is dead and a male suspect was critically injured after a chase led to a wrong-way, head-on crash on Interstate 40 in Greensboro Thursday night. Reagan Hartley and the suspect, Ronnie Fichera, 46, were injured around 10:20 p.m. just west of the Patterson Street exit. Hartley died on the way to the hospital, and Fichera was taken to a hospital for treatment of critical injuries, Greensboro police said. The crash happened after Fichera's Ford Expedition exited I-40 west at High Point Road, went around Four Seasons Mall and entered I-40 east going westbound, police said. Fichera went about 1 1/2 miles in the wrong direction before hitting Hartley's Volvo head-on, police said. Fichera was going an estimated 80-90 mph during the chase, police said. All law enforcement followed the vehicle in the westbound lanes as Fichera kept going the wrong way and crashed, police said. Randleman police began chasing Fichera after suspecting he was an impaired driver, Greensboro police said. Randleman authorities notified Guilford County law enforcement that the chase was heading into their jurisdiction, Greensboro police said. I-40 east was closed between Patterson Street and Gallimore Dairy Road through early Friday morning. Guilford County deputies are investigating the incident, and Greensboro police said they were briefly involved in the chase.
