A driver under the influence of drugs and alcohol swerved into oncoming traffic on a well-traveled St. Louis Park street and struck a vehicle coming the other way head-on, leaving the owner of a well-known Hopkins hardware dead in the other vehicle, authorities said Thursday. The crash Tuesday night on Minnetonka Boulevard killed James Hance, 75, of Brooklyn Park, according to the Hennepin County medical examiner’s office. Hance was the second-generation owner of Hance Hardware in downtown Hopkins.

The Rogers Police Department has identified the woman who crashed into a lake in Rogers on Monday afternoon as Karen Torgerson.

According to Rogers police, Torgerson was driving on Interstate 94 eastbound near a waste management company, VEIT USA, at 4:10 p.m. when she crashed into the lake.

Cody Shirley was in the area when he saw the car crash. Police say he went into the lake to help rescue Torgerson.

Torgerson was taken to the hospital, but was expected to be OK.

A 50-year-old man was one of two people who were killed in a head-on crash near Orono on Friday morning.

Steven Francis Crowley of Delano died as a result of multiple blunt force injuries he sustained during the crash, according to the Hennepin County Medical Examiner.

Orono officers were called at 7:01 a.m. on a report of a collision on Highway 12 just west of County Road 6. When they arrived, they found two vehicles with severe damage.

A car ran a red light and struck a Metro Transit bus Thursday morning at a south Minneapolis intersection, sending the bus crashing into a tree and leaving three people injured, authorities said.

The crash occurred shortly after 8 a.m. on a Route 17 bus heading west on 24th Street at Blaisdell Avenue, said Metro Transit spokesman John Siqveland.

Alcohol may have been a factor in a rollover crash that closed three lanes of westbound Interstate 94 in Minneapolis Saturday morning, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The crash happened near Cedar Ave. S. around 9 a.m. when a 2009 Dodge Neon, going westbound in the second to the left lane, lost control as the driver decided to exit at Cedar Ave., according to the state patrol. The car went up into the embankment and rolled, coming to a rest on its roof outside of the guardrail on the right side of the freeway.

A motorcyclist struck a pothole along a winter-worn stretch of a Minneapolis interstate and was thrown to his death, authorities said Wednesday. Anand Baskaran, 30, of the Long Island community of East Northport, N.Y., hit the pothole along eastbound Interstate 394 near Theodore Wirth Parkway about 9:50 p.m. on Tuesday, according to the State Patrol. Baskaran was wearing a helmet.

A 25-year-old woman died after her car collided with a train in Independence early Saturday morning, according to the West Hennepin Public Safety Department.

Authorities say Paulina Lang, of Buffalo, was alone when a train crashed into her compact car at an intersection off Highway 12 at northbound County Road 92 around 1:15 a.m., authorities say.

Authorities say Lang had gone around flashing warning gates at the crossing to make a right hand turn to go north on CR-92 when the 2013 Chevrolet Spark she was driving was hit by a westbound Burlington North Santa Fe train.

Two cars were totaled but no one was hurt after a school bus apparently lost control on icy roads in Minneapolis on Wednesday morning. The bus was carrying 29 students from Jenny Lind Elementary School at the time of the accident. According to a witness on the scene, the bus was going down a hill on Dowling Avenue North near Sixth Street North when it slid into two cars. The two cars involved were totaled and the front arm of the bus was sheared off, our photographer says, but no one was hurt. The students were put on a different bus and taken to school.
