Silver lining: Woman loses fiancé in car accident, public raises funds to pay off her engagement ring

News is mostly bad, but sometimes it's a little bit good. Omaho couple Kelly Konecko and Aaron Surber were planning to get married in October 2016, a promise Aaron sealed with a diamond engagement ring. The two looked forward to building a family, with Aaron becoming a father to Kelly's 6-year-old son, Johnny. That all changed when last month, Kelly lost Aaron in an accident near Laurel, Nebraska. Kelly survived, but Aaron was ejected during the two-vehicle crash, dying at the scene. Kelly told news station WOWT: “I remember him jerking the wheel and over correcting and we started to spin and then as we spun we hit another pickup on the highway and the Jeep started rocking and the next thing you know we flew off the highway and we rolled and rolled and rolled and when the Jeep came to a stop, I was laying on the passenger side, my window was gone, blood all up and down my arm, there was glass everywhere and I look at the driver’s seat and he’s not there.” In addition to grieving her fiancé, Kelly realized that she could lose one of the biggest things she had to remember him by: her engagement ring. Purchased from Kay Jewelers, the ring was not completely paid off, with $1,500 still owed. As a single mother, Kelly was unable to make the payments, but she hated the idea of returning the ring to the store. So she created a GoFundMe page, hoping that people might hear her story and chip in: 'The ring reminds her of Aaron and she hopes one day maybe her son will be able to use it. “It has a lot of sentimental value, emotion attached to it and someday a long way down the road I can pass it on to my son to give to somebody he loves, just as much as Aaron loved him and he loved me."' To Kelly's surprise, the fundraiser gained traction online and quickly reached its goal. One anonymous donor even gave $715, and as it stands now, the fund is at $1610, meaning that the ring will be able to stay in the family.
