A fuel spill resulting from an overturned 18-wheeler wreck has closed a section of Interstate 20/59 eastbound near Valley Road, according to police.

Authorities are diverting traffic off the interstate at Exit 118. Drivers can reenter the highway at Exit 119, the Fairfield Police Chief said.

The diversion likely will last for several hours. Davis urges drivers to avoid the area.

No one was injured in the crash, which occurred about 10 a.m. when one of the 18-wheeler's tires blew out. The driver lost control of the vehicle. The truck was carrying chocolate milk and spilled most of its load along highway's embankment.

The fuel spill has been contained.

Police and firefighters from Fairfield and Birmingham, along with Jefferson County and Alabama Department of Transportation personnel, are working to clean up the spill.
