5-year-old boy injured in Summerdale crash has died

A 5-year-old boy who was injured in a two-vehicle wreck in Summerdale on Sept. 11 has died. John Peed was a passenger in a Dodge Caravan that was being driven by his mother, Carol Peed, 33, of Foley, when the crash happened. Carol Peed's daughter, Madelyn Peed, 7, also was a passenger in the van and was injured. The children were taken to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Fla. The wreck happened shortly before 3:30 p.m. at county roads 55 and 32. As Peed traveled north on County Road 55 toward County Road 32, she came to a stop sign. "(Peed) stated that she thought she had enough time and pulled out into traffic and got hit," according to an accident report. "(Peed) stated that she could not remember everything that had happened at the time of the wreck." The van collided with a Chevrolet GMT 400 that was being driven east on County Road 32 by Phillip Verdin Jr., 41, of Gulf Shores.
No charges have been filed. "It's just an unfortunate accident that occurred," Police Department Cpl. Vince Miller said. "I don't see any criminal charges here. Of course, we are going to exhaust all efforts on making sure the wreck report and accident site is all done correctly."
