A tragic collision on Alabama Highway 10 claimed the life of a Sweet Water resident and left another seriously injured on Thursday evening, December 5. The fatal crash occurred approximately four miles west of Sweet Water in Marengo County at around 8:15 PM. According to Alabama State Troopers, 35-year-old Roderick Grayson of Sweet Water was pronounced dead at the scene after his vehicle collided with a car driven by 24-year-old Desondria Norwood, also of Sweet Water. Emergency responders airlifted Norwood to a hospital in Mobile for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. State Troopers responded to the scene and are conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision, though no additional details about the crash dynamics have been released at this time.

Location and Infrastructure

Alabama Highway 10, where the collision occurred, is a crucial east-west corridor serving Marengo County and connecting several rural communities. The section where the crash took place lies in a predominantly rural area west of Sweet Water, characterized by gentle curves and occasional agricultural access points. This stretch of highway typically experiences moderate traffic flow, with a mix of local commuter traffic and agricultural vehicles. The posted speed limit in this area is 55 mph, and the roadway features standard two-lane configuration with marked centerlines and shoulder striping. The area is known for wildlife crossings, particularly during dawn and dusk hours.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Under Alabama law, victims of motor vehicle accidents and their families have specific legal rights regarding compensation for injuries, damages, and losses. Alabama follows a contributory negligence system, which can significantly impact liability claims. Affected parties typically have two years from the date of the accident to file a personal injury lawsuit, while wrongful death claims must be filed within two years of the date of death. Potential compensation may include medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and funeral expenses in cases of fatality. Insurance claims should be initiated promptly, as Alabama requires minimum liability coverage of $25,000 per person for bodily injury and $50,000 per accident.
