A Nome man faces multiple felony charges, police said, after he struck an officer with his car while fleeing a traffic stop.

The driver was 34-year-old Scott Aningayou, but when officers asked him to get out of the car, police allege he slammed the car in reverse, accelerating “aggressively” and hitting one police officer in the hip with the vehicle before speeding away. Police gave chase, following Aningayou as they say he sped through two stop signs and turned off the car’s headlights to evade officers on Seppela Drive.
At approximately 2:30 AM Thursday, police in Nome, Alaska stopped a car near Third Avenue and Steadman Street for failing to signal during a turn and non-operational brake lights. When officers asked the driver, 34-year-old Scott Aningayou, to get out of the car, he slammed the vehicle into reverse, hitting an officer in the hip, before speeding away. The officers pursued Aningayou as he spead through two stop signs and turned off his cars headlights to evade officers. The driver stopped his car on West D Street before trying to run, and continued to fight while being taken into custody. Court documents state that Aningayou was in possession of marijuana at the time of his arrest, an offense elevated to a fellony due to his proximity to the Nome Community Center, which housees the Boys and Girls Club. In court, he faced an additional charge of felony assault for attempting to hit the officer with his car, and another felony offense for reckless driving. In addition, he faces misdeameanors, including DUI, resisting arrest, driving with a revoked license, and reckless engangerment, as he had three passengers in his car during the chase.
